Uganda: Trekking All Of Uganda’s Greatest Peaks

The Rwenzori Mountains are home to 6 of Africa’s 10 tallest peaks. Focused on the Afro Montane Forest Zone of this great mountain range, our experienced guides will take you into an incredible landscape like none other.

Accommodation on the mountain is in 6 – 8-person permanent tents. Stretchers & mattresses are provided but you need to bring a warm sleeping bag and clothes. All treks include camping and meals however you may desire to bring your personal snacks, sweets or chocolates.

Climbing ropes and harnesses with carabiners and crampons are supplied free of charge but you are welcome to bring your own.

LAKE GEORGE / AFRO MONTANE FORST ZONE / SINE CAMP

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • The trek begins with a steady climb through the valley towards the Afro Montane Forest Zone. This part of the trek provides excellent opportunities to see blue monkeys, black-and-white colobuses as well as the rare L’Hoest monkey. Chimpanzees have also been sighted in the past. The terrain remains similar until you arrive at Sine Hut.
  • At Sine Camp, the scenery is incredible, as you’ll see the forest you just walked through in the valley below, as a well as Enock Falls which is about 150 meters from the camp. The camp is just below the bamboo zone of the mountain and is a great area to see many different bird species.
  • Overnight at the camp for spectacular stargazing and to rest for the following day’s adventures.

SINE CAMP / KALALAMA CAMP / MUTINDA CAMP

  • Breakfast at the camp.
  • Pack up and set out for a full day of trekking with your guides and porters. The day begins with a relatively tough and steep climb towards the Bamboo Zone which is more difficult in the wet season. Your first check point, Kalalama Camp, 3,147 meters in elevation, located within the Heather-Rapanea, is a great place for a quick rest before continuing to Mutinda Camp.
  • The trail to Mutinda Camp is undulating and takes you through several hills and valleys before a steady climb up to the camp. This part of the trek is characterized by giant heather trees covered in lichen (old man’s beard) as well as a network of streams that appear and disappear at various points. The camp is located near a small river and waterfall and is an excellent place to relax after a solid morning hike.
  • Having arrived at your destination, for the remainder of the day is free at your leisure to relax or explore the surrounding area. Mutinda Camp is a great place to acclimatize before climbing the higher peaks of the Rwenzori Mountains.

MUTINDA CAMP / NAMUSANGI VALLEY / BUGATA CAMP

  • Breakfast at the camp.
  • Pack up and set out for a full day of trekking with your guides and porters. Once across Mutinda valley the trail becomes steeper as the climb continues up the Namusangi Valley (3,840 meters high), which ends abruptly with sheer waterfalls and fantastic views of the Mutinda Peaks.
  • The Namusangi Valley is wide and undulating with the trail crossing several bogs as it climbs steadily to Bugata Camp at 4,062 meters high. Bugata Camp is situated in the Bamwanjara Pass above Bugata Lake, with amazing views across Lake Kopello to Weismann’s Peak, which is often snow-capped. Bugata Camp is an excellent facility, with solar lights and hot water for bathing.
  • Overnight at the camp for spectacular stargazing and to rest for the following day’s adventures.

BUGATA CAMP / BAMWAJARA PASS / HUNWICK’S CAMP

  • Breakfast at the camp.
  • Pack up and set out for a full day of trekking with your guides and porters. The day will begin by climbing up a ridge, followed by a minor decent and then a steady climb to Bamwanjarra Pass at 4,450 meters. There is a hut conveniently located at the pass just in case the weather makes a turn for the worse.
  • From the pass on a clear day you’ll have excellent views of the three main peaks. The trail continues down into the valley where the prevalence of lobelias makes it a great place to spot the Malachite Sunbird. This is followed by some steep sections before a steady climb up and over a ridge to Hunwick's Camp. The camp is positioned on the top of a deep valley and has great views of Mt Stanley, Mt Baker and Weismann’s Peak.

HUNWICK’S CAMP / MOUNT BAKER / HUNWICK’S CAMP

  • Set out for a full day of trekking with your guides and porters. Spend the day ascending Mt. Baker, located at 4,844 meters above sea level. Return to Hunwick’s Camp in the early afternoon.
  • Overnight at the camp for spectacular stargazing and to rest for the following day’s adventures.

HUNWICK’S CAMP / SCOTT ELLIOTT’S PASS / MARGHERITA CAMP

  • Breakfast at the camp.
  • Pack up and set out for a full day of trekking with your guides and porters. Having left Hunwick's Camp the trail will cross the valley and head towards Lake Kitendara, a picturesque lake surrounded by astonishing vegetation. This will signify the start of your climb up Scott Elliott's Pass and further up the ridge to Margherita Camp, 4,485 meters high, ideally situated between large rocks which offer shelter from the strong winds.
  • Overnight at the camp for spectacular stargazing and to rest for the following day’s adventures.

MARGHERITA CAMP / MARGHERITA PEAK / BUJUKU CAVES

  • Breakfast at the camp.
  • Pack up and set out for a full day of trekking with your guides and porters. Wake up this morning around 2:30am to begin your ascent towards Mt. Stanley up Margherita Peak. Due to sudden weather changes that can occur on top of the mountain, it is necessary to turnaround time by 10:00am, regardless of whether you are able to reach the peak by that time or not. Margherita glacier has also suffered from global warming and as the outer edges of the glacier recede the ice is becoming steeper with one section of about 200 meters more than 60% grade. It is imperative that clients understand and take advice from the guides during this part of the trip.
  • For those with less mountaineering experience, we suggest that you stay on Stanley glacier and climb up to a good vantage point on the southern edge of Alexandra Peak to enjoy fantastic views of Congo and the lower mountain ridges.
  • Descend the 5,109-meter peak down to Bujuku Caves. Overnight at the camp for spectacular stargazing and to rest for the following day’s adventures.

BUJUKU CAVES / MOUNT SPEKE / HUNWICK’S CAMP

  • Breakfast at the camp.
  • Pack up and set out for a full day of trekking with your guides and porters. Summit Mt. Speke, 4,890 meters high, today. Descend the mountain and return to Hunwick’s Camp at 3,975 meters above sea level.
  • Overnight at the camp for spectacular stargazing and to rest for the following day’s adventures.

HUNWICK’S CAMP / OLIVER’S PASS / KIHARO CAMP

  • Breakfast at the camp.
  • Pack up and set out for a full day of trekking with your guides and porters. From Hunwick’s Camp, we begin the day by climbing up a ridge towards McConnell’s Prong where you’ll have the best views of all three peaks and Scott Elliott’s Pass before reaching Oliver’s Pass at 4,505 meters. The distance from Hunwick’s Camp to the top of Oliver’s Pass is 3km, as the trail cuts across and below Weismann’s Peak to the confluence of the Nyamwamba River which flows down through Kilembe and Kasese to Lake George in Queen Elisabeth National Park.
  • If you wish to climb Weismann’s Peak 4,620 meters high, from Oliver’s Pass, you may do so at an extra cost of $20 per person. On a clear day, you’ll have fantastic views of Margherita, Stanley, Speke and Baker peaks.
  • The trail meanders down the valley to Kiharo Camp, situated in a deep valley with high cliffs and dense vegetation. Overnight at the camp for spectacular stargazing and to rest for the following day’s adventures.

KIHARO CAMP / KASESE

  • Breakfast at the camp.
  • Pack up and set out for a full day of trekking with your guides and porters. The final decent to the Nyamwamba Valley has some amazing views, arguably the best in the Rwenzori. This part of the trail is characterized by trickling rivers that burst into waterfalls, deep valleys and forest covered hills.
  • Upon completion of the multi-day trek, met by your local driver and transfer to back to the safari lodge for check-in. The evening is free at your leisure. Dinner will be served at the lodge.
