EXPLORING OLD ZULULAND

  • After breakfast, we travel north into Old Zululand and the region’s game reserves which are a treasure trove of wildlife.
  • The first stop is the St. Lucia Wetlands, A Unesco World Heritage Site.
  • This breathtakingly beautiful 260,000-hectare park is home to the greatest concentration of hippo and Nile crocodiles in South Africa. We will undertake a two-hour boat trip to view these amazing creatures on this unique narrow saline estuary. The birdlife is prolific and the white and black mangroves play host to a plethora of fascinating life forms.
  • Next, we will head further north to Thanda following the ancient game trails of rhino, hippo and elephant – paths that became linked with human footpaths through the aeons.
You will stay for four nights at a luxurious Private Game Lodge located on one of South Africa’s most spectacular conservancies in the vicinity of the majestic Lebombo Mountains - Thanda Game Reserve, where one can experience wildlife in its most natural setting. Protected by your personal game ranger, you’ll track lion, leopard, buffalo, rhino and elephant (the Big Five) as well as cheetah, hippo, giraffe, and all the animals of the region. In addition, there are well over 400 species of birds. Evening game drives provide the exhilarating experience of pursuing predators on the prowl while listening to the exotic sounds of Africa at night. This glorious, untamed territory was once the hunting ground of legendary military genius, King Shaka. Thanda is a 5-star destination and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World. The Thanda Tented Camp is built in colonial safari-style, offering an authentic bush experience. The tents have wooden decks, comfortable rooms, and en-suite bathrooms, as well
as outdoor showers. Public facilities include an attractive reception area, a curio shop, a lounge area for guests to relax in, an enhanced dining tent, a rim-flow pool, and a new boma.

  • This part of the coast is a popular destination for divers who come to explore this world-renowned dive site, a fossilized sand dune that lies 5 km off the Umkomaas estuary.
  • The Aliwal Shoal, attracts a myriad of warm water and cold-water fish as they converge on the Shoal to create a kaleidoscope of colors.
  • After this great aquatic experience, we return to Durban once again.
  • An exciting element of our last full day is a visit to the Mahatma Gandhi Phoenix Settlement. At the turn of the 19th century Gandhi, then a young lawyer, arrived on the shores of Durban to represent a client in the local city court. After being ejected from a train for sitting in a “whites only “section, he decided to remain in Durban and started his passive resistance movement. Purchased in 1904, the Phoenix Settlement comprised of 100 acres of land. It was on this settlement that Gandhi started his journey of transforming from a successful lawyer to a simple peasant with a passion for liberation, nonviolence, and spirituality. The philosophies born in Durban lay the framework for his return to India where he uses these philosophies to fight for India’s independence from Great Britain.

SOUTHERN DRAKENSBERG

  • After breakfast, We depart from Moorcroft Manor and the Southern Drakensberg and travel in a northwesterly direction into the Central Drakensberg Mountains. Your morning will be filled with awe and wonder as you travel through outstanding mountain landscapes. You will be engrossed as quintessential Africa is uncovered by your guide.
  • Your first stop this morning takes you into an essential and absorbing part of Zulu society. So-called ‘witch-doctors’ or more correctly, traditional healers, form an integral part of Zulu society with almost one healer for every ten people. Traditional healers are divided into three major disciplines: iziNyanga, iSangoma, and abaThandazi, both male and female.
  • You will then travel into the foothills of the Drakensberg Mountains (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to the home of a traditional Zulu iSangoma who will share the intimate details of Zulu culture in the world of a traditional healer.  An iSangoma is chosen even before the individual is born. Zulu people believe that the Ancestors gather to discuss the destiny of the un-conceived, unborn child.
  • Leaving the Zulu village of Tendele behind us, you will travel onwards to the Giant’s Castle Game Reserve with towering peaks providing the backdrop.
  • You will enjoy a relaxing afternoon and evening at this very special reserve. The reserve is world-famous for its Stone Age rock paintings. The rock art of the Natal Drakensberg is unique and is a “must-see” for discerning visitors. Considered by certain experts to be amongst the finest stone-age paintings in the world, one of the most striking features of the art is its diversity and our inability to interpret this art with absolute certainty.
