After being ejected from a train for sitting in a “whites only “section, he decided to remain in Durban and started his passive resistance movement. Purchased in 1904, the Phoenix Settlement comprised of 100 acres of land. It was on this settlement that Gandhi started his journey of transforming from a successful lawyer to a simple peasant with a passion for liberation, nonviolence, and spirituality. The philosophies born in Durban lay the framework for his return to India where he uses these philosophies to fight for India’s independence from Great Britain.
